Possible Ulnar Artery Laceration

Case: 32 yo male cut his wrist punching glass. Laceration was repaired at an outside hospital but sent to tertiary care center for evaluation of arterial laceration. At presentation the wrist laceration is sutured and no bleeding noted. Physical exam shows no neural deficit and good distal arterial flow.

Image Description: The video clip shows the ulnar artery in long axis. In the center of the laceration is imaged as a disruption of the soft tissue and contour of the artery. Doppler signal shows minimal flow distal to the laceration.

Results: The ultrasound shows an arterial laceration.

Role of Ultrasound: The ultrasound allows the physician at the tertiary care center to determine if they need to remove the sutures and examine the wound. It also allows the physician to determine if a hand surgeon needs to come in to see the patient or can follow up as an outpatient.
